The Cavan - Monaghan Fine Gael convention that has been postponed tonight is now re-scheduled for Friday. Outgoing sitting TD and Minister Heather Humphries confirmed the date this morning during an interview on the Joe Finnegan Show.
Minister Humphries announced her plans to step away from politics over the weekend leaving a sure Fine Gael seat in this constituency up for grabs. Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, T P O'Reilly was to run as a Cavan-based candidate alongside seasoned politician and deputy leader of Fine Gael in the upcoming elections.
Over the weekend, the Taoiseach said his party still planned to run two candidates and nominations have now re-opened and will close at 5pm on Wednesday. Simon Harris also said he had already been approached by party members in Cavan-Monaghan who wished to "replace Heather Humphries".
Heather Humphries said it is now up to potential candidates to put their name forward for next Friday's convention when she will support whoever is put on the ticket:
There are five seats up for grabs in the constituency. So far, the candidates are Sinn Féin's Pauline Tully and Matt Carthy, as well as Independent Ireland's Shane P O'Reilly, Sarah O'Reilly of Aontú, Val Martin of the Irish Freedom Party and Independent candidate Lester Gordon.
