17% of registered tourist beds in Cavan are being used to accommodate refugees and international protection applicants. The figures are contained in Fáilte Ireland's latest report on tourist beds contracted to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth.
According to the report, Cavan had the highest proportion of beds contracted to the Government in this region with 6% of beds contracted in Monaghan.
As of November 2023, an average of 13% of all Fáilte Ireland registered beds in Hotels and Guesthouses in the region were allocated to the Government. Clare is the county with the highest proportion of Government allocated tourist beds at 33%, while County Meath has 26%. In its conclusion, Fáilte Ireland state that the potential loss to the tourism sector as a result of this could be between 750 million and 1.1 billion per year.
