A Fianna Fáil Councillor in Cavan has defended the move to rezone residential land to green spaces.
The motions went against calls from the chief executive and senior planners, who claimed it would slow investment in housing within the county.
Meanwhile, a local Sinn Féin TD says the State should fund local authorities to allow them build houses, and stop a reliance on the private sector.
At a meeting on Monday to discuss the County Development Plan, local Fianna Fail councillors tabled motions in favour of altering the zoning on three parcels of land from residential to usable public open space.
These are lands at Swellan, overlooking Killymooney Lough and the former machinery yard.
Councillors were warned that the decisions might not promote housing developments, but it was countered by calls for more open space and to provide residential amenities.
Councillor John Paul Feeley told Shannonside Northern Sound that elected members can’t just act as “rubber stamps”.
Speaking on The Joe Finnegan Show, Pauline Tully likened the current objections in Cavan to one from last year, when a housing development in Cootehill was blocked by all but the Sinn Fein representative.
She also defended Sinn Féin’s voting on certain housing projects in Dublin and says county councils need to be allowed build more houses.
