The Fine Gael convention that was planned for tomorrow night has been postponed.
The event that was due to be held in the Errigal Hotel in Cootehill has been delayed due to the shock announcement by Minister Heather Humphreys over the weekend that she is to step away from politics.
Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphries and Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, TP O'Reilly were the two expected to be selected for the constituency.
Minister Humphreys was elected to the Dáil on the first count in the 2020 election receiving over 12,800 first preference votes.
Cllr TP O’Reilly looks sure to be on the ticket in Cavan but the question is who will be the other candidate representing Monaghan come the election.
There are five seats up for grabs in the constituency, with Sinn Féin's Pauline Tully and Matt Carthy, as well as Independent Ireland's Shane P O'Reilly, Aontú's Sarah O'Reilly, Val Martin of the Irish Freedom Party and Independent candidate Lester Gordon already announcing their intention to run.
As it stands Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have yet to host conventions for Cavan/Monaghan .
One thing is for sure now after this weekend, the name Heather Humphreys will not be on the ballot papers whenever the General Election will be held.
