A Co Fermanagh man has praised the role of local firefighters for the life-saving work they do within communities.
Paul Shannon was recently awarded for his heroic actions, following a house fire in the village of Derrylin back in 2018, which tragically claimed the lives of four people.
Paul, who lived nearby to the property entered the house, along with Bernard McDonald and managed to clear entrances that was later used by local fire and rescue crews.
Both men were awarded for their actions at the National Police Public Bravery Awards, however it is the work of local fire crews on that day which Paul is giving credit to.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he praised the "calm" and "professional" manner in which firefighters carry out their role, even in the most severe of circumstances.
He added that fire safety measures and training is something that everyone should be made aware of in some form:
He continued; 'I would very much encourage people to know and have fire
safety training in some form. Once I seen the extent of the fire I didn't
realise the house could burn so quickly. It was a block house but just the
way the fire engulfed in really a matter of minutes, it just made me realise
how dangerous it is.
Speaking on the important work of local fire crews, Paul said, "I saw
first-hand the work of the fire service and the way they gained entry into
the house. It's unbelievable the way they can work in those condition yet
remain so calm and professional, it really is a credit to them.
"Most of these fire crews are local, part-time fire fighters and it's
unbelievable the training they have, with regards to their own safety. It is
truly amazing.'
