Women4Elction has launched a new training schedule to help attract women into local politics. Just 22% of women in Cavan and 16% in Monaghan are represented in the local political arena.
Megan Reilly is the Training and Engagement Lead with Women4Election and she says there are a myrid of reasons as to why women are not putting themselves forward locally. She said that once outside the major urban centres, female representation in local politics is "extremely low".
Ms Reilly added that finance, childcare and confidence are just some of the reasons why women don't put themselves forward. "Any conference I have been to within the voluntary not for profit sector has always had majority of women present.
"So what we want to see is that energy and leadership from women and their understanding that politics is a really viable career option for them. Sometimes there are very clear routes into politics for men but we just don't see that so much when it comes to women."
