The driver of one car, a man in his 70s, and a passenger of the other car, a woman in her 70s, both died.

Their funeral will take place in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Swinford, today at 12 noon.

The man, who was a passenger in one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations are ongoing at this time.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

The collision which took place near McCaughey's garage marks the first fatality to occur on Monaghan roads so far this year.

Officers will return to the scene of the incident on the A4 Belfast Road at the junction of Slate Quarry Lane tonight.
