The Dáil has heard of the "hurt, rage and disappointment" carers feel over the continuation of the means test for the carers' allowance.
Verona Murphy from the Regional Group of Independent TD'S said carers are very upset that the Government had not chosen to abolish the means testing in Budget 2025.
Local Minister Heather Humphreys in her response said she family carers pay a hugely important role, and she has been committed to supporting them in that role. She said like all other TD's she meets with family carers and the role they play is vital.
The Fine Gael Minister said that through Budget 2025 she has now almost doubled carers income since the government was formed. During the discussions, Deputy Murphy said that family carers felt that Minister Humphreys through her position as Minister for Social Protection was talking out of both sides of her mouth. Minister Humphreys said she could be accused of many things, but speaking out of both sides of her mouth was not something she normally did.
