Families across Cavan and Monaghan who heat their homes with oil will miss out on Governement plans to address the cost of living crisis by cutting energy VAT rates.
While moves to cut VAT on electricity and gas was approved, it was revealed that the Government was unable to secure a deal with the EU to also reduce VAT on home heating oil.
Celine Clarke, Head of Advocacy and Communications with 'Age Action Ireland' believes elderly people who are living in poorly insulated houses, particularly in rural areas will be impacted the most.
A figure of 11,000 households across Cavan and Monaghan receive fuel allowance, however Mrs Clarke revealed that two thirds of households across the country do not, highlighting the dire reality of the situation.
She believes there is a "real opportunity" for the Government to now put in place long-term solutions to ensure that those who are locked into fossil fuels are not left behind.
