Extraordinarily high levels of community transmission of covid-19 is putting pressure on hospitals.
That's according to Dr Augustine Pereira, who is the Director of Public Health North East with the HSE.
Close to 40,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed over the past three days and the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 has doubled in the past three weeks.
Today the figure stands at 1,624 - the highest in over 14 months.
Three weeks ago, the number was only 808.
While Dr Pereira acknowledges that many of these people are not in hospital with the virus, he told Northern Sound that the need to isolate these patients puts "significant demands on hospitals":
