Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith has expressed his "delight" over Cavan County Council's decision to approve planning permission for a major extension at Cavan General Hospital. Under new plans approved today, a new five storey extension to accommodate a new emergency department on the lower ground floor will be constructed. This will also provide capacity for 58 additional beds. The 7,588 square metre extension will also include an Endoscopy Unit, Inpatient Accommodation on Floors 1, 2 and 3, and a plant area on the fourth floor. Also approved are 37 new parking spaces, including 10 accessible spaces, 4 EV charging spaces, and 7 motorbike spaces.
According to Deputy Smith, the approval for expansion works is an "important development" for the people of Cavan and Monaghan. Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Smith hopes that now planning permission has been granted, the HSE would be in a position to go to tender at an early date. Deputy Smith expects to have builders on site in the autumn before the end of this year. He added that this standalone project will be of huge benefit to patients across Cavan/Monaghan and also to staff at Cavan General Hospital who are working long hours in an "inadequate facility."
