Excess lime in the water in Kingscourt has caused serious damage to electrical appliances including dishwashers, showers, and washing machines and local people are "furious" over the situation.
That's according to Cllr Clifford Kelly who raised the matter at a recent meeting of Cavan County Council.
The Fianna Fail local area representative says Irish Water sent a letter to him recently stating that the lime does not pose a threat to public health and the matter is therefore not its responsibility.
The water utility also pointed out that homeowners can purchase a device that can be attached to the internal water supply to ease the problem.
Cllr Kelly said the issue was first detected four years ago when Irish Water first upgraded its water treatment facility in Kingscourt.
