The EU’s triggering of Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol due to a row over vaccines has been described as a “baffling” and “very odd act from people who should know better”.
That’s according to Karen Coleman, who is the Editor of Euro Parl Radio.
On Friday, the European Commission invoked Article 16 as part of efforts to control vaccine shipments out of the EU.
However, the Commission was forced to backtrack on the plan after strong criticism from politicians north and south of the border.
Ms Coleman says Article 16 is intended to be “a method of last resort” and it’s “gobsmacking” that the European Commission would do something that creates tension between the UK and Ireland:
