Co. Cavan is the worst affected, at close to 9,000 power outages reported by the ESB, particularly in the Virginia and Cavan Town areas, where there are 6,000 power outages in the two areas combined.

A decision on the application is due in February.

Darragh is the fourth time that people in Belturbet have been without power for two or more days in the past year. 

Nationally, at the peak of damage 400,000 ESB customers were without power at some point over the weekend.

The ESB says due to the severity of the storm, it's still assessing the damage.

ESB crews are working again today to restore power to tens of thousands of homes around the country.

The impacted customers were without power from around 9pm last night when the electricity provider received reports of no electricity in the area. 

Gardaí in Castleblayney attended the incident shortly after 8am this morning.
