A third of people in this country is living in energy poverty and a cap is needed as the situation worsens.
That's the view of Meath West TD, Deputy Johnny Guirke who raised the struggles of households when it comes to energy bills in the Dail yesterday.
He gave one example of a Meath man whose bill has gone up eight fold in the past twelve months. 77 year Gerry Clarke has been charged almost 1,700 euro for his bill from December to February.
These high bills come as the government considers a new levy on any state energy company that receives profits that are above normal. Gerry's plight is similar to many peoples situation across Cavan Monaghan and Meath. Speaking to Northern Sound the Meath West TD says something has to be done and done fast.
