The Irish Cancer Society is calling for more awareness to be focused around the supports offered by various energy suppliers for those who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis. A recent survey carried out by the Irish Cancer Society revealed "stark levels" of energy hardship experienced by cancer patients receiving palliative care at home. Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher attended a meeting with the Irish Cancer Society who are now calling for a number of issues to be addressed.
Speaking to Shannon Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher said that it's "important" for people to know that supports are available when it comes to paying utility bills. According to Senator Gallagher, many energy suppliers provide credits that will help families who find themselves dealing with a cancer diagnosis and added costs.
"I would encourage people to please contact their energy provider," said Senator Gallagher. "We're being told by the Irish Cancer Society that energy suppliers are giving reductions to families who do find themselves in that particular situation and indeed perhaps any hardship situation of a medial nature. I know that there is a lot going on in the minds of those who are ill and their family members but it's so important to make that call to the energy provider, explain the situation to them and I would like to think that the energy provider would be sympathetic to the plight that the family finds themselves in and would do all in they can to reduce household bills as much as they can."
