After weeks of highlighting the plight of 20 secondary school students who were left without a seat on their school bus in the wider Mullahoran and Ballymachugh area, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Local TD, Deputy Brendan Smith says he has received confirmation from the Department of Education in relation to allowing a bigger bus operate on that route.
The A20 bus route services Kilnaleck, Killydoon, Ballyheelan via Ballinagh to Cavan Town.
The families staged a protest at the start of the new school term and told Northern Sound at the time they were prepared to ramp up their campaign until the Department of Education fixed the problems on their route. The affected students are on what is called concessionary transport tickets because their families have chosen not to send them to the nearest school in their catchment are because it is in Granard, County Longford. The problem is compounded by the fact that other families who do not necessarily need a bus ticket have bought one at the capped rate of €125 per household - but may not have taken up their seat.
Deputy Smith says he is glad to receive confirmation from the department and looks forward to finally having the situation resolved. He acknowledged that it has been a very difficult time on families in the area.
