It will be the end of 2022 at the earliest before the new Garda Station in Bailieborough is operational.
The long awaited station has been planned since 2007 but it's been dogged by delays.
The OPW and Gardaí acquired the former National Irish Bank building on Main Street in 2018 with a view to renovating it for use as the new station.
Cavan's Joint Policing Committee has been told that contracts for the works are expected to be signed before the end of this year with work starting in the first three months of next year.
But local Superintendent Gordon Englishby says it will be the end of 2022 before the renovations are expected to be complete.
The current Garda Station in the town, which was originally an RIC barracks, has been described as being in a dilapidated condition and not fit for purpose.
