Electric cars are perfectly suited to rural Ireland according to one Motoring Journalist.
It comes as new figures show just over 5% of cars in Monaghan and 7% of cars in Cavan are electric. Former Environment Minister Richard Bruton believes the government needs to 'double down' on electrification and called for more grants for rural areas to switch to electric cars. Geraldine Herbert is Motoring Editor with the Sunday Independent.
Speaking to Northern Sound, she says the low take up in EV's is more to do with misinformation regarding them.
"The fact that they're only for urban areas and run-arounds, the range wouldn't be suitable for rural commutes, has persisted for a long time and it's just not being counteracted. In fact, in rural Ireland, most people have a driveway so they can charge them at home. If you're charging at home, EVs are considerably cheaper. The range on the new EVs is somewhere close to 600km. There's no issues around battery longevity. These are all things that are obviously putting people off and they really need to be addressed".
