A "substantial sum of money" was taken from an elderly woman in Cavan this morning by a man impersonating a Garda, between the hours of 10am and 10.30am.
The incident took place when a male called to the home of the elderly woman, claiming he was a Garda and produced what looked like a Garda I.D. in the New Inns area of Ballyjamesduff.
According to Gardaí, the perpetrator was "well dressed" with a shirt and tie and was about 6 feet in height.
The man claimed there had been a robbery in the area and showed the lady money and asked if it was hers.
The injured party went to check her money and the suspect followed her into the house.
He subsequently took a "substantial sum" of money and left the scene in what is described as a blue car.
It is believed the suspected car then went in the direction of the N3.
Gardaí are now appealing to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area this morning or who may have dash cam footage to contact Bailieboro Garda Station on 042 9694570.
Gardaí have also advised the public to "pass on the message of this incident" as criminals usually target more vulnerable people when attempting a "despicable" crime such as this.
Gardaí also reminded people that if coldcallers call to your house, to never let them in until you have confirmed their identity and to "always report" suspicious activity and callers to your local Garda Station.
