A man in his 80s has been injured following an attack by a Garda impersonator in Co Monaghan.
An elderly Carrickmacross man was robbed of a substantial sum of money on Saturday last by a middle-aged man posing as a plain-clothes Garda.
The robbery occurred at approximately 12.40pm on Saturday afternoon close to Carrickmacross Town last when the victim was standing outside the front gate of his house. The man in his 80s was approached, outside his residence, by a person purporting to be a member of An Garda Síochána. According to Gardaí a sum of cash was taken from during the course of the incident.
It's understood the man purporting to be a Garda informed the elderly man that he was a plain-clothes garda and immediately requested that he produced his driving licence. When the man took out his wallet, the thief quickly made his escape in his vehicle with the contents leaving his elderly victim suffering from minor injuries.
Gardai confirmed to Northern Sound that the elderly local man received medical treatment following the incident. Gardai in Carrickmacross are appealing to any motorists or pedestrians who may have witnessed the incident to contact them with any information which might help in their investigation.
