Eight new classrooms have been approved for St Bricin's College in Belturbet.
The school has been threatened with closure due to a proposal to merge St Bricin's and St Mogue's College, Bawnboy, into a new facility in Ballyconnell.
Local TD Brendan Smith welcomed the news and said local politicians and the Save our Schools campaign have had a very "united voice" on the need for these works.
Deputy Smith told Shannonside Northern Sound that the approval sends a "clear message" regarding the possible closure of the school:
Meanwhile, the Save our Schools campaign, whose stated aim is to prevent the proposed closure of St Bricin's College and St Mogue's College, also welcomed the news.
It says the new classrooms will include a “state of the art ASD unit” to support students with autism.
The group thanked the school's staff and local politicians, including Brendan Fay, Sean Smith, John Paul Feeley, and Brendan Smith for their efforts in advancing the project.
