The introduction of a new media regulator here may prevent footage like that filmed in Co Meath this week from being circulated so widely. A 14 -year old schoolboy suffered severe facial injuries and broken teeth during an attack in Navan on Monday.
Video footage of the assault was shared on social media and viewed by millions. Media lawyer Sarah Kiernan says the new media regulator will have stronger powers to remove violent content quickly.
"Part of their remit is to police online activity when they bring it into force. So, they will be regulating online platforms including video-sharing platforms services which would include social media," she added.
Meanwhile, two separate investigations are underway into the attack on the Co Meath teenager. Gardaí are investigating the incident - which appears to have taken place near two schools - while the Louth/Meath Education and Training Board has also launched an investigation into the matter.
