The level of HSE spending on agency staff in Cavan and Monaghan Hospital exposes the failings of government health policy in the region, according to a local TD.
A recent Northern Sound News Freedom of Information request revealed that almost €6.9 million was spent on agency staff in the local hospitals last year.
Matt Carthy says agency staff are being used to plug holes in the hospitals, and that it is not acceptable that the health services for the Northern Sound region are funded on such an ad hoc basis.
He says agency workers should be given the security of a permanent role.
And Deputy Carthy says permanent work offers better value for money to the State:
