Cavan and Monaghan have been awarded over €6.5m in funding under the Active Travel Scheme. Cavan receives €3m while Monaghan has been allocated €3.5m. The funding is being provided by the Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority, and is part of a €290m national spend on walking and cycling infrastructure this year.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cavan Monaghan Fianna Fail TD Deputy Niamh Smyth, said this latest tranche of funding will allow for the enhancement of the region's towns and villages. She added that footpaths and safety measures outside local schools will be given priority this year as a direct result of the funding allocation.
"The purpose of active travel and these particular funds are for grassroots projects in our local towns and villages to enhance our footpaths. Also around schools there will be an enhancement of safety measures. This is a really good scheme and it's the second time that Cavan and Monaghan have been allocated funding under it," Deputy Smyth said.
