€5.3m has been allocated to contractors operating the Department of Education school transport scheme.
The funding is to help ease the impact of increases to the cost of fuel for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 of this year.
Cavan Monaghan TD, Deputy Brendan Smyth, highlighted how over 121,400 children, including over 15,500 children with special educational needs, are being transported on a daily basis to primary and post-primary schools throughout the country.
In this region 5,800 vehicles are operated by private contractors under contract to Bus Eireann for the provision of school transport scheme services.
Deputy Smith added that the financial contribution is a temporary measure and fuel costs will continue to be kept under review.
