Towns across the country are set to get funding to improve things like cycleways and footpaths.
22 councils are getting 33 million euro for active travel projects and 14 million euro's going to 26 local authorities for climate change adaptation steps.
The plans include the provision of new cycle lanes and footpaths in the area of Carlow IT and the design of an interconnected network of cycleway in Killarney, Co. Kerry.
Department of Transport Minister of State, Hildegarde Naughton says it includes plans to fix roads and to make walking and cycling safer:
Locally over three million euro has been allocated under the scheme to Cavan and Monaghan.
While it will go towards upgrading roads, footpaths, cycle lanes and bridges in the counties a large portion of the funding will be used to mitigate flooding in communities across the border region.
In total, over €1.53 million will be allocated to 28 projects in Cavan and €1.48 million will be allocated to 31 Monaghan projects.
Some of the projects include almost €650,000 for cycle lanes in Castleblaney and Carrickmacross, €150,000 to resurface the Main Street of Ballybay Town, €140,000 for footpaths in Cavan Town and €120,000 to resurface the town centre of Cootehill.
Local Minister Heather Humphreys has welcomed the announcement stating that investing in measures to mitigate against flooding will be particularly as the winter months approach.
