Almost €2.5m has been announced for upgrade works for Cavan and Monaghan rural roads and laneways.
Local Minister Heather Humphreys made the announcement today under the Local Improvement Scheme which will support the continued improvement of non-public roads and lanes that are not normally maintained by local authorities.
Earlier this year Cavan County Council was allocated €336,000 and now have been granted an additional €1.4m resulting in a total allocation this year of almost €1.75m.
Monaghan County Council was originally allocated €304,000 and with today's confirmation of €1m making a total of over €1.3 available for these roadworks this year. On a national scale €16 million in funding will be used to repair and upgrade hundreds of rural roads and laneways across the country
Making the announcement today Minister Humphreys said this funding is all about making peoples' lives that bit easier and ensuring we have good access to homes, farms, businesses and local amenities. “I’m very pleased today to announce a further €16 million in funding to repair and upgrade hundreds of rural roads and laneways in towns and villages right across Rural Ireland. Good roads are absolutely vital for our rural communities and this record investment under the Local Improvement Scheme will make a huge difference in terms of access and connectivity".
“As someone who grew up on a farm myself, I know all too well what it is like when a milk truck cannot gain access to collect the milk. I know too how poor quality roads in rural Ireland can negatively impact on families and businesses. That’s why the Local Improvement Scheme was re-introduced in 2017 by my predecessor and colleague, Michael Ring. Since its re-introduction, over €130 million has been invested in rural communities the length and breadth of Rural Ireland".
Meanwhile local Councillor TP O'Reilly says this is very much about keeping rural living alive and promoting the areas with having a good road network. “This funding is all about making peoples’ lives that bit easier and ensuring we have good access to homes, farms, businesses and local amenities".
“We are all familiar with the roads and laneways within our own communities that are full of potholes and in desperate need of repair. This is a very important announcement for people living in this region and it shows you that the Minister is well aware the funding is very much needed in this area and this will help towards improving our rural roads across the Co Cavan".
