The €2.5m that was allocated to the N2 Clontibret to the Border scheme, and the €600,000 promised for the Ardee to Castleblayney upgrade by Transport Infrastructure Ireland has hit a glitch.
This week's meeting of Monaghan County Council heard that the "devil is in the detail" after councillors learned that it won't be allocated unless an EU funding application gets the seal of approval.
An application has been made by the local authority to the EU, however councillors say there is no guarantee that the much-needed approval will be forthcoming. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Brian McKenna said a "totally and utterly" unacceptable situation has arisen.
He added that local area representatives are demanding a meeting with Transport Minister Eamon Ryan over this "outrageous development". "To say that we won't get the funding from the Department and that it's dependent on funding from Europe is an outrage.
"The people of this region do not deserve to be treated like that. We are as entitled to have decent roads for our business people and to access services, etc, as any other part of the country. It's not acceptable in any shape or form; and if Minister Ryan refuses to meet with us, we will go to Minister Ryan's offices in Dublin and wait for him.
