'Cllr Campbell has called for more to be done to stop illegal diesel dumping'

Monaghan County Council will receive an allocation of €100,000 to deal with costs incurred in dealing with diesel wash dumping during 2023. Environmental services are preparing a claim to cover costs incurred to date from January to April 2023. The value of this claim is expected to be approximately €35,000.

According to Cllr Aidan Campbell, "thousands" is spent on cleaning up diesel wash per year, particularly in the South Monaghan area. He added that a funding allocation of €100,000 would be better spent amongst local community groups across the county.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Campbell said; "Small grants are available for our local tidy towns groups, and they range from €400 to €1,000 - which is small money, but funding of this kind has a massive impact on these groups.

"Yet we are spending thousands per year in cleaning up this diesel wash that is still a plight to the South Monaghan area. It concerns me to think that we’re throwing away good money, money which our local groups could benefit from instead."
