15 pigs including 10 piglets were dumped at a location in Co Cavan last week. Locals who became aware that the pigs would come to harm contacted the Gardai.
The Department of Agriculture subsequently collected the animals and brought them to the My Lovely Pig Rescue in Co Kildare for shelter. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan's Show, Cathy Davey, Co-founder of the charity said many of the pigs are pets.
She added that were it not for the quick thinking of locals, the black and white animals would have starved or been hit by a passing vehicle. "The piglets were dumped out, somehow, or maybe transported there and the back of the trailer opened and left there.
"They were cold and hungry and were roaming around searching for food and the Gardai were notified. The Department then ensured that they were brought to safety," she added
