There's been a 44% increase in the number of drug driving offences in Cavan
over the past year.
In the first quarter of 2020, there were 18 drug driving offences, but this
has risen to 26 in the first three months of this year.
Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken told a recent Joint Policing Committee
that gardaí are putting "a lot of time and effort" into tackling drug
driving.
While he pointed to increased checkpoints and better detection technology as
causes for the marked increase, he acknowledged that a "lack of observation"
by people using drugs while driving is also a factor.
The Chief Superintendent expressed concern that there is an "acceptance"
among some people that the "taking of certain drugs is acceptable even
though it is illegal", and warned the meeting that the purchasing of drugs
is "fuelling the profits of criminals".
