At present there is a 15-week delay in getting a test date there, according to the average estimated time on the RSA website.

Learner drivers in Cavan who apply to sit their driving tests are facing almost four month of a wait.

That's according to Deputy Brendan Smith who raised the issue in the Dail in recent days. The local TD called for greater resources to be allocated by the Department of Transport to alleviate the backlog which was showing little sign of easing. Deputy Smith said there was an urgent need to reduce delays for driving tests in the Cavan test centre.

The Fianna Fail TD says this current wait time is unacceptable.

"This is not acceptable and again I appeal for additional personnel to be allocated to this centre. I welcome the increased number of testers that Minister Jack Chambers put in place but obviously we need more to reduce those waiting times and give learner drivers a chance of getting on the road. Delays in driving tests put a limit on a person's work, education, and routine daily activities and the Department must put in place the necessary resources to deal with this issue which impacts severely on people particularly young people in rural areas such as Cavan".
