A driver in Cavan has topped a list of highest speeds recorded by gardaí carrying out checks across the country over the St. Patrick's bank holiday weekend. The driver detected by Cavan Gardaí Roads Policing Unit clocked the highest speed of all offenders as they drove at 209 kilometres per hour in a 100 kilometre zone. Gardaí informed Northern Sound the offence happened on the N3 in Daggan near Butlersbridge.
The driver in question recorded the highest speed in a list of shocking statistics from the weekend with other drivers caught driving at 113km in a 50km zone; 147 km per hour in a 60km zone and one driver caught speeding at 157km in an 80km zone. The detections were part of an extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation in place between Thursday, 14th of March and Tuesday, 19th March.
There were three fatalities on our roads during this period and five serious collisions took place which resulted in five people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
