It's going to take years to bring a refuge centre for victims of domestic abuse to Monaghan That's according to Safe Ireland which is currently working with Termann Domestic Abuse Services on a masterplan for a safe space in Cavan Monaghan.
Meanwhile, Monaghan County Council has assured both organisations that proposals to acquire a property for a safe house through the Capital Advance Scheme will be fully supported. Cllr Cathy Bennett says this latest development is unacceptable and she pointed to how Cavan and Monaghan are two of just nine counties in Ireland that have no safe space for victims of domestic abuse.
She added that she'll be writing to the Justice Minister to find out why promises made on the issue have been broken. "Another issue I did raise with the Gardai is the fact that women have to leave the home with their children because of a domestic abuse situation.
"Should it not be the man that is made leave the home? Should it not be the perpetrator that is made leave the home? This is something that annoys me and I would like to see Monaghan County Council acting on a refuge centre straight away," Cllr Bennett said.
