The number of dogs entering Monaghan County Council Dog Pound in 2022 increased to 382 - more than double the number in 2021. According to the local authority, this was most likely due to a significant decrease in the demand for dogs since the end of the Covid pandemic.
43% of the dogs admitted were voluntarily surrendered by their owners. 39% had been microchipped prior to admittance, indicating a steady increase in the percentage of microchipped dogs in the Irish dog population. Three dogs were euthanised in the Dog Pound as they were suspected of attacking people or livestock, a euthanasia rate of less than 1%.
Elsewhere, 58 dogs were reclaimed by their owners, 250 were rehomed, and 72 were transferred to Carrick Dog Shelter. According to Monaghan Council, the high number of dogs rehomed directly to the public is primarily due to the work of Carrick Dog Shelter, who operate the Dog Pound and who advertise these dogs on their Facebook page.
The number of dog licences issued in Monaghan in 2022 was 5,873, a slight reduction from 2021. Meanwhile, the number of licences bought online, as opposed to in the Post Office was 32%.
