A new building for Gaelscoil Eois in Clones has been paused by the Department of Education due to a lack of funds. The Department announced last week that 58 building projects across the country were to be postponed due to financial pressures - and the local primary school was one of them.
Members of the Ballybay-Clones Municipal District agreed this morning at their monthly meeting to write to the Education Minister, Norma Foley and Minister for Public Expenditure, Pascal Donohoe to "demand" that the new building proceed to construction without further delay.
Cllr Pat Treanor says there is a genuine sense of disappointment in Clones over the matter. He added, the Gaelscoil was established 28 years ago and in the intervening years, it has had to fight for every single thing it needed.
"The Board of Management worked for a long time to advance this project. They had gotten a site from Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board; got the funding; and then went to tender. The company involved is also local and everyone is very disappointed that this project has been pulled for the time being," he added.
