Monaghan County Council has passed a motion calling for the VAT rate for the tourism industry to be reduced to zero.
Councillors have called for the change to alleviate pressure on businesses that have been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The motion was brought forward by Sinn Féin's Pat Treanor but some Councillors said a 5 per cent VAT rate should be looked for instead.
Currently local businesses are paying 13.5 per cent VAT, while businesses in the north pay just five per cent.
