A design team is currently working on route selection for a "family-friendly" cycle path in Rossmore Park.
Earlier this year, Monaghan County Council was granted funds to develop an off-road cycle route in the Monaghan town forest.
The project was announced at the start of the year, and is being funded with €289,000 from the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme, with match funding of €72,000 by the local authority.
A 2.5 kilometre route is being designed in conjunction with Cycling Ireland and Emyvale Cycling Club, with the aim of allowing children to have a safe place to build their skills on a bike.
The council hopes to create a cycling route for families to enjoy off-road cycling and build on the Ulster Canal Greenway that links Rossmore Forest Park with Monaghan town.
The design team was appointed in July and is currently working on route selection and specifications.
When the design is completed, Monaghan County Council will publish a tender process for construction works, which will include path developments, path improvements, the provision of rest points as well as signage, landscaping and other work.
