A Cavan TD has welcomed a "renewed commitment" from the Minister for Health to continue a scheme which enables eligible patients to access healthcare in the North.
The Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme allows people who live in the south to access and be reimbursed for private healthcare procedures across the border by the HSE.
According to Deputy Smith, Minister Stephen Donnelly is working to determine the legislative framework necessary to underpin the operation of the scheme.
The Minister will also be working on an "extensive examination" of options to inform that the drafting of a General Scheme is currently underway.
The Scheme was introduced to mitigate the loss of access to care from private providers in Northern Ireland under the EU Cross Border Directive, which ceased to apply as a result of Brexit.
