A Cavan Monaghan TD has hit out at AIB over proposals to cut services at Carrickmacross and Castleblayney branches.
The Carrickmacross and Castleblayney branches will be among the 70 to turn cashless, with this taking effect from the 21st of October.
However, Deputy Matt Carthy described the move as a "crazy proposition" that will have "devastating implications" for consumers and businesses in the towns affected.
According to Deputy Carthy, "AIB is a bank that was bailed out by Irish taxpayers to the tune of €3.5 billion, while government amended the law to protect their profits from taxation for 20 years.
"They have an obligation to those Irish communities that suffered the austerity that their failures brought about."
While the Sinn Fein representative urged AIB to "reconsider the matter", he revealed he will also be contacting the Minister for Finance requesting government intervention on the matter.
Deputy Carthy added that Government "cannot continue" to sit back while services are removed from local rural communities.
