The curlew bird is the country's only red-listed bird species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature list of threatened species.
However, the Department of Heritage says our national breeding population has declined to below 105 pairs - a decline of 98% since the 1980s.
The Curlew was very common in 1980s with 5000 pairs.
Niall Hatch from Birdwatch Ireland says the curlew is near extinction due to changes in farming methods across the country.
Massive changes to their eco system where they live and because of a eco collapse has affected the now rare bird species.
Niall says there is a few reasons why such a major drop off has happened. He says farming practices changing over the past 20 to 30 years and the wetting of bogs has had a negative affect on the curlew.
