80,000 people now live in Cavan and Monaghan according to the CSO who has released more statistics from the Census conducted in April of last year.
Cavan Town had the largest population at 11,741 in April 2022, while Monaghan Town had with a population of 7,894.
Of those towns with a population of at least 500 people in April 2022, Mullagh was the youngest with an average age of 34.1 years. The oldest was Cootehill, with an average age of 40.4 years. Nationally, the average age was 38.8 years.
While in Monaghan of those towns with a population of at least 500 people in April 2022, Carrickmacross was the youngest, with an average of 37.1 years. The oldest was Emyvale, with an average age of 41.5 years. Nationally, the average age was 38.8 years.
On the national front the largest town in Ireland was Drogheda in Louth with a population of just over 44,000 people. Interestingly, the only towns in Ireland with populations above 30,000 were all in Leinster.
There were 49 large towns in Ireland with a population of over 10,000 people in 2022 while In the year prior to the Census, over 265,000 residents moved home within Ireland.
In April 2022, 58% of Cavan's usual residents (47,339 people) were born in the county. A further 22% (18,112) were born elsewhere in the State. The remaining 19% (15,570) were born outside the State, which was up from 17% in 2016
In April 2022, 52% of Monaghan's usual residents (33,378 people) were born in the county. A further 26% (16,753) were born elsewhere in the State. The remaining 23% (14,665) were born outside the State, which was up from 21% in 2016.
