A Monaghan councillor has called on First Minister in the North Michelle O'Neill and Minister for Infrastructure John O'Dowd to "reverse" the decision previously made by the SDLP's Nicola Mallen in relation to the North South Interconnector. According to Cllr Seán Gilliland, now that power-sharing in Stormont has been restored, it's important to put pressure on both Government's on either side of the border over the opposed over-grounding of the North South Interconnector. The Fine Gael representative went on to highlight how locals are feeling "threatened" over letters they have received by Eirgrid "thanking them" for their cooperation, however no such conversations have been had according to Cllr Gilliland.
Cllr Gilliland added that this is just the "beginning" and that opposition is "stronger than ever before" from local communities. Cllr Gilliland also put forward a motion calling for Minister Eamon Ryan to meet with Minister John O'Dowd to discuss the situation further with a delegation from Monaghan County Council and locals constituents.
"We want to get this situation revisited because we're not tolerating any nonsense of talk that it can't be done when we know fine well that the undergrounding of the North South Interconnector can be," explained Cllr Gilliland. "It's time that both Government's got their act together on this and finally go with the wishes of the people."
