Local councillors have called on the Courts Service to make clear its intentions for the Carrickmacross Courthouse.
An MD meeting this week heard that the Courts Service was scheduled to carry out a Health and Safety Audit on the courthouse last week.
However, councillors have warned they won't tolerate it lying idle.
In a letter to the Carrickmacross-Castleblayney MD, the Courts Service said it would revert back to the authority on receipt of the health and safety audit report.
However, Cllr PJ O'Hanlon said the Courts Service should to be invited into the MD once the audit is complete so councillors can ask what the future plan for the building is.
He warned that public representatives can't let the courts service "do what it likes with the building.
He also also queried if there will be a Courts Service in the town, given the move to Monaghan Town.
Cllr Colm Carthy labelled this a "further centralisation of public services".
He added that if the Courts Service says it will not use the Carrickmacross building for court, "then we need to find a different use for it".
Meanwhile, Noel Keelan said, "we will not tolerate this building lying vacant" and called for a different use to be found for the building if it will not be used for court service."
Elsewhere, Aidan Campbell noted that "some money would have saved the Market House in Castleblayney".
He added that councillors need to ensure that the Carrickmacross Courthouse is saved.
