Aontú's Sarah O'Reilly has been elected chair of Cavan county council.
The Bailieborough Councillor is the party's first Cathaoirleach in the country and took the chain of office with its leader Peadar Toibin in attendance.
She was elected at the Council's AGM held this afternoon, held in the Cavan Leisure Centre to allow for social distancing. She takes over from Fianna Fail's Shane P O'Reilly.
Councillor Sarah O'Reilly topped the poll in the Bailieborough-Cootehill area last year.
She was today described as a person of "great personal courage" after she left Fianna Fáil over the party's stance in the run up to the abortion referendum.
Fianna Fáil's Aidan Fitzpatrick was elected Leas-Cathaoirleach.
Both were elected unopposed.
