A Monaghan Cllr has paid tribute to local taxi services across the county,
particularly over the festive period.
Cllr Noel Keelan's comments are in relation to the increase in drink driving
figures which were discussed at a recent sitting of the County Monaghan
Joint Policing Committee.
According to Cllr Keelan, the lack of taxi services across the county is a
contributing factor to the increased levels of drink driving detected on
local roads, particularly over the last 12 months.
This follows concerns that taxi shortages since the Covid pandemic have led
to people, particularly in rural communities with no way home after a night
of socialising.
As a result, many people across county Monaghan are concerned as to how they
will make it home this Christmas, or if they should bother going out at all,
much to the concern of local businesses.
Cllr Keelan highlighted the difficulty in recruiting and retaining taxi
drivers at a local level and commended those who are already providing the
service.
