Monaghan County Council have a budget of almost €90 million to spend on projects around the county next year.
Last Friday, the elected members signed off on the ambitious budget which totals exactly €89, 656,507. The budget amount, which is the highest for the council to date, is up by 12 per cent on last year. Meanwhile, business rates for the coming year has been set at 0.2445, which is an increase of 3 per cent on last year.
Revenue for the budget is collected from commercial rates and local property tax payments to the Council. While the government provides funding for many projects from roads to heritage, in most cases, local authorities like Monaghan must match this funding from its budget.
Cathhaoirleach David Maxwell told Northern Sound everyone in Monaghan should see the budget being rolled out in their area in 2024: "The big projects opening next year that'll be opening will be the new Peace Campus in Monaghan Town and the Bio Connect Innovation Centre," Councillor Maxwell told Northern Sound, "But, look, people from Aclint Bridge to Moy Bridge, from Connons, Clones to Iniskeen can see work and projects taking place in their areas and it's funded through the ratepayers and the local property tax and from amounts of government funding we get to do all this work."
