A staffing crisis is evident in Cavan schools and calls to address that were unanimously supported during a meeting of local authority members this week.
Cllr Paddy McDonald - who made the calls - said there was a large number of teachers absent because of Covid-19 and huge difficulties getting substitute teachers to replace them.
He also pointed out that shortages weren’t just down to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Those gathered heard there was ‘a lack of planning’ on the part of the Department of Education.
Student teachers and those on secondment were being drafted in, in an effort to deal with what Mr McDonalad described as, ‘the crisis’.
It’s just not enough, he added.
Contract tracing and air filters are also needed when it comes to dealing with Covid-19 in our schools.
He also said there was confusion across the board in schools when it came to who should and shouldn’t be wearing masks.
