Monaghan County Council said they received several calls from Emyvale business people and members of the public complaining after construction workers left out signs diverting traffic away from the Co. Monaghan village for a week. .
The signs advising motorists to avoid the town were erected on a Friday evening at the end of the month ahead of planned roadworks but, the work was not carried out. Over the week in question, people avoided the town as advised and businesses lost custom and local residents inconvenienced.
Several councillors from the area also raised the issue at the most recent meeting of the council. Acknowledging that council staff were not aware of the problem at the time, Sinn Féin councillor Bronagh McAree said "this needs to not happen again". Gareth McMahon from Corporate Services said when the Council enquired it was told a key piece of construction plant broke down and a family member of a key member of staff passed away halting work.
